Chester, IL to Goreville, IL 84 miles

Lots of coal activity along the river. Was advised that the local coal is high in sulfur and is shipped overseas. The Wyoming coal is shipped to IL and burned, much easier to scrub.

Riding along the Mississippi and on top of the Levees was most unusual. No traffic and like a bird sanctuary

Farming is so difficult, too little rain and now too much rain. Spoke to a farmer who bought his granddaddy's farm which is on the banks of the river and all the rain has left the corn crop rotting. He took in stride.

I don't think I've seen a sign on this trip w/o having at least one bullet hole. Maybe you can order them pre-shot.

Tom Simses I thought of you on this trip with corn. Just like when we traveled through CA's artichoke fields and we couldn't find a restaurant that would serve then. I been passing miles and miles of corn and yet to have a good ear of corn!

Cho from Carbondale Bike shop adjusted my front dérailleur and set my tire pressure.  Fee $2.
Pic with his 2 mechanics.

Peter and Sydney from Delaney's. Real nice folks. All through cyclist get pie (his wife makes most the pies) and ice cream no charge. I know Peter as the "pie guy"

Peter only works 2 jobs and runs the restaurant. Seems like the staff enjoys working with Peter. Real good southern food which included collard greens. The cherry pie was excellent.
